TULLY, TULLY HEADS AND HULL HEADS

As you travel north from Cardwell you pass through forests and farms with a background of lush green mountains always in view. Surrounded by banana and sugar cane plantations, Tully is one of the wettest towns in Australia and the proud home of a 7.9 metre high Golden Gumboot.

Established in the 1920’s as a sugar town, the Tully Sugar Mill is now a major employer in the town and processes around two million tonnes of cane each year. During the crushing season (June to November) there are daily guided tours that take visitors through the sugar mill to view the processing of the cane from cut stalks through to raw sugar.

With its strong agricultural industries, Tully is an ideal base for working backpackers with jobs usually available all year round. For the traveller, Tully has a good range of shops, supermarkets, banks, vehicle repairers and medical services.

Alligators Nest is a picturesque picnic area with a crystal clear fresh water swimming hole, just 7kms north of Tully. There are no alligators, or crocodiles, to be worried about. The area was named after a local scout group called ‘The Alligators’.

A good sealed road leads to the Tully Gorge National Park, 35km west of Tully. The Tully River is regarded as one of the best white water rafting spots in Australia, with grade 3-4 rapids. Along their journey, rafters enjoy stunning views of the World Heritage listed rainforest.

Mount Tyson towers 640 metres over the Tully township and is popular with walkers. The climb to the top (a 2 to 3 hour round trip) is rewarded with a magnificent view over Tully.

The quiet retreats of Tully Heads and Hull Heads rest on the white sands of Googarra Beach and overlook many tropical islands. With good boat ramp facilities and a Coast Guard base they are very popular spots with fishing and boating enthusiasts. During the winter months the legendary Coast Guard Fish and Chip nights at Hull Heads attract locals and visitors from far and wide.
